Recommended pubs

  • Bell 50 Middlesex Street
    E1 7EX

An independent pub between Liverpool Street and Aldgate stations with a board in the games room downstairs – occasionally not available due to private functions, but a nice pub, so worth the risk.

  • Castle 44 Commercial Road
    E1 1LN

Undoubtedly the coolest place to play darts in Aldgate, possibly the whole of London. Not sure about lighting, or quality of the throw, but it's most definitely hip.

  • Duke of Somerset 15 Little Somerset Street
    E1 8AH

Difficult to find this lumbering pub, but once inside there is a welcoming oche near the pool table. Looks like a good venue for a lengthy uninterrupted game.

  • Duke of Wellington 12 Toynbee Street
    E1 7NE

A proper old fashioned darts pub, with several teams and a grumpy landlord who is probably a lovely bloke when you get to know him. Three boards, one being used for pre-match practice when visited.

  • English Martyrs Club 62/64 Chamber Street
    E1 8BL

Best described as an extremely friendly school canteen that serves beer, this is not a private club but a bar beneath a church which contains five dart boards, pool tables, and very friendly staff giving a proper and faintly confusing East-End welcome. Heaving with people throwing darts on visit.

  • Peacock 41 Minories
    EC3N 1DY

Three boards, some of which are locked up for match nights. A surprising find.

  • Princess Alice (ex City Darts) 40 Commercial Street
    E1 6LP

Was named the City Darts for a few years, and retains three boards in the function room upstairs, in addition to the one on the ground floor. Popular on this site - it was the venue for the launch party of Murder on the Darts Board.

  • Scarborough Arms 35 St Mark Street
    E1 8DJ

If you find it you will discover a board downstairs and a large function room upstairs containing a second. Team plays on several nights. Very small pub, so you will know the landlady by the time you leave.

  • Other pubs

  • Aldgate Exchange 133 Whitechapel High Street
    E1 7PT

Surprisingly pleasant looking pub, but the grotty surroundings make it a last resort if all the decent dart pubs around are oddly busy.

  • Artful Dodger 47 Royal Mint Street
    E1 8LG

A locals' pub far far away from the feel of the City, containing a very lonely looking board.

  • Brown Bear 139 Leman Street
    E1 8EY

Movable tables are spread around the oche in this uninspiring boozer. In another part of town it may be more popular.

  • Gun 54 Brushfield Street
    E1 6AG

A board is in a cabinet blocked by tables. Staff say that it is rarely - if ever - used.

  • Lamb Tavern 10-12 Leadenhall Market
    EC3v 1LR

Two boards located in the cellar/basement bar which is, rightly, called the Dive bar. Decent boards and throw, but usually only open Monday to Friday weekdays and the whole place smells of a cross between rubber and cleaning fluid. Review from Steve Holmes, also checked by phone in April 2010. Beautiful pub.

  • Ship Tavern 11 Talbot Court
    EC3V 0BP

A basement pub that you would be forgiven for not noticing. Two boards, one in the middle of the seating area, the other accessible with a decent throw ruined by being placed under an air-conditioning unit - which regularly blasts reminders from the adjacent toilets. Review by Steve Holmes. Added April 2010, not verified as they don't answer their phone.

  • Three Lords 27 Minories
    EC3N 1DD

Board in the basement bar which is locked much of the time; has a team.
